Holy, Holy, Holy!

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty Lyrics

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Origin of Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

Reginald Heber was born in 1783 to a wealthy family in west England. Reginald was a poet who attended Oxford University, winning several awards for poetry before becoming rector for his father’s church.

In 1823, Reginald became Bishop of Calcutta, serving for three years before dying of a stroke. In her deceased husband’s papers, Heber’s widow discovered the words of one of the most powerful and beautiful hymns ever written, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.” But it wasn’t until years after Heber’s death that the poem would become one of the most revered Christian hymns in the world.

In 1861, a publisher unearthed the words. He requested that John Bacchus Dykes put the poem to music. John, who had been a church organist from his childhood, was co-founder and president of the Cambridge University Musical Society.
