Bible Verses About Tithing

You are sitting in church when the offering plate comes around. A lot of people toss stuff in as it gets passed along. You nervously look around and pull out a wadded up twenty dollar bill but upon another look, most people are putting white envelopes into the bowl. Am I doing it right?

You put the twenty in anyway but can’t help feeling like you have missed something important. This happens every week in America and it is a common scene that plays out in churches all over the world.

What is tithing? Do you have to tithe? How do you tithe correctly? Do I get anything back? These are all common and important questions that people ask when faced with the intimidating golden bowl in the pew.

What is Tithing?

The word tithe literally means to give a tenth but it is used to describe any ritual giving to the church. Today that means weekly or monthly donations to a church in the form of money but in ancient times, tithes were often material goods such as food and drink or wood and stone.

The idea of tithing is extremely ancient and can be found all the way back in Genesis 14. The word tithe alludes to a tenth and many people will say that a traditional tithe is one-tenth of everything you make. This portion should be donated to the church in the name of God. Genesis 14 verse 20 reads:

And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Genesis 14:20 New International Version (NIV)

Abraham praises God and gives Him a tenth of everything. This is the basis of what most people see as traditional tithing and this idea has pervaded Christian thought all the way from Genesis to now. Simple right? Just give a tenth of everything. Unfortunately, its a little more complicated than that.

How to Tithe Correctly

The one-tenth principle, I’ll call it the Abrahamic tithe, is an Old Testament idea that has stuck around until today. Christians are called to tithe differently. Instead of giving a mere tenth of our earthly possessions, Christ calls on us to give everything to God. Jesus says the following in Mark chapter 12 verses 41-44:

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

Mark 12:41-44 New International Version (NIV)

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

This is a direct refutation of the Abrahamic idea of tithing. There have been people all through history who could give comfortably out of their wealth where one-tenth does not mean much to them. They do it out of habit or pride or ritual but not out of a place of worship and faith. Jesus calls Christians to give everything, even in our poverty, in order to please God. The apostles picked up on this as well. Paul writes in Romans chapter 12 verse 1:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Romans 12:1 New International Version (NIV)

Paul writes that our bodies should be made a living sacrifice to God. Our bodies! This is our true and proper worship. Again, the theme of giving your whole self, your body, your last penny to God shows up in the New Testament. This is the tithing that Christians are called to do. It is harder than Old Testament tithing for sure. Abrahamic tithing is a simple equation and then a choice whether or not to give that amount on that day. Christ’s tithing is so much deeper than that.

Benefits of Tithing

Tithing sounds hard to new believers. Whether its ten percent of wealth, which feels like a tax or trying to give your all at a new church, this is not easy. God never said it would be easy, but it is rewarding. Tithing is a very deliberate way to honor God. Praying can be done in private and in silence. Tithing is very public and it takes material wealth or time in order to achieve it. It requires giving which in turn requires you to give something up. This intentional act really makes it apparent what the goal is for tithing and what the focus is, which should be God and His people.

If you give regularly to a church over time, you have a chance to see that church grow and thrive. You can see mission trips get sent off, new buildings raised, food given to the hungry and so much more. A ritual intentional act of generosity can reap visible fruits in your church over time. If you tithe your time and talents you can build relationships with those in your church community and your community overall. It will put you in the path of those who need you and your time and money.

This can help build stronger Christian communities and will make God an obvious focus in your life weekly or daily. The book of Proverbs speaks about giving generously:

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 3:9-10 New International Version (NIV)

If your church and your community are important to you, giving will surely reap rewards. Jesus says:

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:21 New International Version (NIV)

If your treasure is built up in God, in your church, in the community so then will your heart be. It will truly bring you closer to all of the things you are contributing to.

Malachi 3:8-9

Will a man keep back from God what is right? But you have kept back what is mine. But you say, What have we kept back from you? Tenths and offerings. You are cursed with a curse; for you have kept back from me what is mine, even all this nation.

Malachi 3:10-12

And on your account I will keep back the locusts from wasting the fruits of your land; and the fruit of your vine will not be dropped on the field before its time, says the Lord of armies And you will be named happy by all nations: for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of armies.

Bible Verses About Tithing in the New Testament

Matthew 6:1-4

Take care not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them; or you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. When then you give money to the poor, do not make a noise about it, as the false-hearted men do in the Synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Truly, I say to you, They have their reward. But when you give money, let not your left hand see what your right hand does: So that your giving may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward.

Matthew 23:23

A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make men give a tenth of all sorts of sweet-smelling plants, but you give no thought to the more important things of the law, righteousness, and mercy, and faith; but it is right for you to do these, and not to let the others be undone.

Mark 12:41-44

And he took a seat by the place where the money was kept, and saw how the people put money into the boxes: and a number who had wealth put in much. And there came a poor widow, and she put in two little bits of money, which make a farthing. And he made his disciples come to him, and said to them, Truly I say to you, This poor widow has put in more than all those who are putting money into the box: Because they all put in something out of what they had no need for; but she out of her need put in all she had, even all her living.

Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, crushed down, full and running over, they will give to you. For in the same measure as you give, it will be given to you again.

Luke 11:42

But a curse is on you, Pharisees! for you make men give a tenth of every sort of plant, and give no thought to right and the love of God; but it is right for you to do these things, and not let the others be undone.

Luke 18:9-14

And he made this story for some people who were certain that they were good, and had a low opinion of others: Two men went up to the Temple for prayer; one a Pharisee, and the other a tax-farmer. The Pharisee, taking up his position, said to himself these words: God, I give you praise because I am not like other men, who take more than their right, who are evil-doers, who are untrue to their wives, or even like this tax-farmer. Twice in the week I go without food; I give a tenth of all I have. The tax-farmer, on the other hand, keeping far away, and not lifting up even his eyes to heaven, made signs of grief and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I say to you, This man went back to his house with God’s approval, and not the other: for everyone who makes himself high will be made low and whoever makes himself low will be made high.

1 Corinthians 16:2

On the first day of the week, let every one of you put by him in store, in measure as he has done well in business, so that it may not be necessary to get money together when I come.

2 Corinthians 8:2-3

How while they were undergoing every sort of trouble, and were in the greatest need, they took all the greater joy in being able to give freely to the needs of others. For I give them witness, that as they were able, and even more than they were able, they gave from the impulse of their hearts

1 Timothy 6:6-8

But true faith, with peace of mind, is of great profit: For we came into the world with nothing, and we are not able to take anything out; But if we have food and a roof over us, let that be enough.

Hebrews 7:1-2

For this Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a priest of the Most High God, who gave Abraham his blessing, meeting him when he came back after putting the kings to death, And to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of everything which he had, being first named King of righteousness, and then in addition, King of Salem, that is to say, King of peace;

Conclusion

Tithing is an ancient concept that means to give one-tenth and for a long time, this was the way that people viewed it. Some people still view it that way. But as true Christians and followers of Christ, we are called to tithe in a much more radical and unique way. We are called to give as much as we can to Christ and to the people around us.
